Open portfoliosBooks have existed in such a wide variety of forms and categories throughout time that it is impossible to capsulize one's feelings and ideas about them. Some of our best friends from many times and many places have been met within the books we have read. It is possible to learn what would, otherwise, be completely inaccessible by studying books and manuscripts--or carved stelae or temple walls or even the book of the earth in fossilized footsteps of our most ancient ancestors (or the current digital output of computerization). In a word, it's hard to pin down exactly what a book is. In more recent times, it has become the custom of art makers to create books as art objects that may or may not be printed and may or may not be in a customary format.

With that in mind, this presentation features a one-twelfth part of a project undertaken by a group of Sacramento artists in celebration of the new millennium. Called, naturally enough, The Millennium Book, each artist or group of artists created a section of twelve pages each for the project, replicated twelve times, which were then compiled in twelve sets. The edition of twelve was sent to major museums on every continent of the earth, including one for the ocean seas. Portfolio cover

Carol Gilbert-Wagner and Rachel-Delilah Stonecipher made their contribution to the project a letterpress production featuring original prints and text printed by local master printer, Robert Dickover of the Stalwart Sloth Press on a Vandercook SP15 proof press. Wagner designed prints of her alter ego, Dr. Atl, and Stonecipher designed prints of Lady Liberty. The production, titled A New Age Begins also included five additional sets for sale that were collated and housed in a handbound portfolio and slipcase designed and produced by L. J. Dillon also of the Stalward Sloth Press.
